Living Culture

Examples of Aboriginal art and craft were seen and recorded by explorers to the Tasmanian region in the 19th century. Along with clubs and spears, there were woven baskets, pleated water containers of bull kelp and necklaces of iridescent shells. Today, Aboriginal communities continue to make these art and craft objects as a cultural activity, and as a means of creative expression and enjoyment.

Another example of living culture at work is the annual harvesting of young muttonbirds. The birds are utilised for their meat, oil and feathers. The industry is an important source of income and employment for our people. But the seasonal activity also has an important role to play in sustaining our culture and maintaining a sense of community.
